Welcome to the third edition of STEM Spotlight, STEM Unites’ exciting glimpse into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This month’s edition is all about the exciting opportunities in STEM! Delve into a vast array of 60 resources featuring scholarships, courses, summer camps, and more!

Science
Starting off this edition, we have 15 resources all about the captivating world of science! Learn more about the secrets of life through MIT’s free online course or explore ten scholarships fit for your educational desires. Dive in!
1. Lionel High School Chemistry Scholarship
The Lionel Chemistry Scholarship aids high school students interested in studying chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering at a university. The scholarship is valued at $4,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years. Applications are closed for this year but will reopen next year.
The Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists offers a $500 scholarship for high school graduates entering a science program at a Canadian university in the fall. Applications are still open and close on June 15, 2024.
The University of Ottawa offers a maximum $5,000 scholarship to a student in the Environmental Sciences Program at the Faculty of Science. Applications have closed, but this scholarship is something to look forward to next year!

4. HSBC Bank Canada Award
Mount Royal University provides a $6,000 award to a full-time student who will be enrolled in the first year of the Bachelor of Science – Environmental Science major in the upcoming fall semester. The deadline for this award is August 3, 2024.
5. Claudia Fortin Scholarship Fund in Environmental Sciences
The Claudia Fortin Scholarship Fund in Environmental Sciences at the University of Ottawa awards a $2,000 scholarship to a student in the first or second year of the Environmental Sciences. Applications have closed, but this scholarship is something to look forward to next year!
6. Jean Crozier Rising Star Entrance Scholarship in the Faculty of Science
The University of Alberta’s Jean Crozier Rising Star Entrance Scholarship in the Faculty of Science is awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the first year of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science. Recipients must be Albertan residents.
7. Neil Siemens Science Scholarship
The University of Alberta’s Neil Siemens Science Scholarship is awarded to a student who is an Alberta resident with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science. Selection is based on academic standing.
8. UNB Loree Bremner Scholarship
The $7,500 Loree Bremner Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick is awarded to a female student who is entering the Bachelor of Science degree program on the Fredericton campus. The student must be from New Brunswick.
9. Dr. Douglas G. Baird Scholarship
The Dr. Douglas G. Baird Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick is a $1,250 scholarship awarded to a Fredericton campus student who is beginning the Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree program directly from high school.
10. Diversity in Science Award
The University of Calgary’s Diversity in Science Award is a $10,000 award offered annually to an entering undergraduate student who is Black, Indigenous, or a person of colour and enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary.
11. Science Unlimited Summer Camp @ University of Toronto
Science Unlimited offers grade 10 and 11 students a unique week-long workshop featuring departments like astronomy, chemistry, physics, and more! The application deadline for 2024 is now closed, but this is something to look forward to next year!
12. Faculty of Science Undergraduate Research Scholarship @ UOttawa
The Undergraduate Research Scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarships offered by the University of Ottawa, awarding research experience with a research group at the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Medicine to 16 of the best eligible students! Applications have closed, but this is a fantastic opportunity for next year.
13. Summer Science Program @ UBC
The Summer Science Program is a one-week cultural, health, and science program for Indigenous students in grades 8-11, providing firsthand experience at the University of British Columbia.
14. Alberta Innovates High School Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program
The Alberta Innovates High School Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program at the University of Calgary provides exceptional Grade 11 students with summer research experience to help launch their careers and academic goals. Applications for the 2025 cycle will be available in January 2025.
15. MITx: Introduction to Biology - The Secret of Life
MITx 7.00x: Introduction to Biology – The Secret of Life is a free course that will allow you to explore the mysteries of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology and genomics, and rational medicine!
Technology
After diving into the numerous opportunities in science, let’s switch things up and explore the vast array of resources we have prepared for the field of technology!
1. TD Scholarship in Computer Science
Western’s TD Scholarship in Computer Science is awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students registered in the second year of a Computer Science program. The scholarship is $1,600 for up to three years.
The University of Waterloo’s up to $4,000 Rico Mariani Scholarship for Black and Indigenous Students in Computer Science is awarded annually to an outstanding Black or Indigenous undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four.
The Scholarship for Women in Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Ottawa offers women registered as full-time students in an undergraduate or graduate program in computer science or software engineering at the Faculty of Engineering a $1,000 award.

2. Rico Mariani Scholarship for Black and Indigenous Students in Computer Science
4. Eldon and Maxine Clair Scholarship in Computer Science
The Eldon and Maxine Clair Scholarship in Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick is offered to Fredericton campus students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Computer Science.
5. Xerox Canada Inc. Scholarship Fund
The Xerox Canada Inc. Scholarship Fund at the University of Ottawa provides a minimum of $2,000 to a student in an undergraduate program such as computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, etc. The student must be an Ontario resident.
6. Google Lime Scholarship
The Google Lime Scholarship offers undergraduate students with disabilities in the U.S. or Canada pursuing a computer science or computer engineering degree a prize of $5,000 USD for those studying in Canada and a prize of $10,000 USD for those studying in the U.S.
7. Mahin and Ali Ghorbani Scholarship
The Mahin and Ali Ghorbani Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick offers a student from New Brunswick or an international student beginning the first year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Computer Science on the Fredericton campus an award of $2,000.
8. Mary Goggin Scholarship
The Mary Goggin Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick offers a Fredericton campus student beginning a Bachelor of Computer Science degree program an award of $1,000.
9. Dalhousie General Dynamics Canada Scholarship
Dalhousie University’s General Dynamics Canada Corporate Partners Scholarship of $5,000 is awarded to a student who is entering any undergraduate program of the Faculty of Computer Science. Applicants are required to have completed high school education in Nova Scotia.
10. Gwen Lock Scholarship for Women
The University of Victoria awards a scholarship of $1,000 to an academically outstanding female undergraduate student entering or continuing to study engineering or computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering. No application is required.
11. Harvard CS50's Introduction to Computer Science
CS50x is Harvard University's free introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming for majors and non-majors alike, with or without prior programming experience!
12. MITx: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python
MITx: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python is a free introduction to computer science as a tool to solve real-world analytical problems using Python 3.5.
13. Seeing Possibilities and Rewards in Computer Science (SPARCS)
SPARCS at the University of Waterloo is a unique opportunity aimed at supporting Grade 9 and 10 students with little to no exposure to computer science whose gender identities are underrepresented in computer science. Sessions may include introductions to cryptography, bioinformatics, quantum computing, graphics, human-computer interaction, and hardware.
14. Robotics Summer Camps for Children
The University of Alberta offers numerous summer camps for students from grade 4 to grade 9, aimed at introducing students to the field of robotics!
15. UBCx: Software Engineering: Introduction
UBCx: Software Engineering: Introduction is a free course that teaches students how to apply engineering principles, such as Agile, to build a full-stack software system.
Engineering
Next, let’s venture into the realm of engineering, where boundless possibilities await. Prepare to dive into a treasure trove of resources tailored to ignite your creativity and propel your engineering journey forward!
1. Darren L. Buium Scholarship 2024
The Darren L. Buium Scholarship is a $1,500 award for students residing in western Canada who are in financial need and are entering their first year of an engineering, electrical, technology, or construction-related program. Applications close on May 31, 2024.
Eight scholarships, valued at $1,500 each, will be provided annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in CEAB-accredited programs in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, including Software Engineering. The next application deadline is July 15.
The University of Waterloo offers a $4,000 IESO Undergraduate Engineering Award, granted annually to an undergraduate student who identifies as a woman enrolled in Year Two of Electrical, Computer, or Nanotechnology Engineering. The next application deadline is October 1.

4. Engineering Society Leadership Excellence First Year Award
The $1,000 Engineering Society Leadership Excellence First Year Award at the University of Waterloo is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in their 1A term in the Faculty of Engineering. The next application deadline is October 15.
5. Maria Stanson Memorial Scholarship
The $1,500 Maria Stanson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one student who self-declares as a woman. The student must enrol in engineering at the University of Manitoba immediately following high school graduation.
6. Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award
The Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award is a $3,000 award offered to a graduating Canadian secondary student who is entering a full-time welding technician or welding engineering technology program. The application deadline is June 14, 2024.
7. CTAA Undergraduate Scholarship
The $2,000 CTAA Undergraduate Scholarship will be presented to a student who has been admitted to or is currently enrolled in a Canadian undergraduate degree that relates to asphalt technology. Eligible fields of study include chemistry, chemical engineering, and construction or civil engineering. The deadline is September 15.
8. Roger A. Shorey Memorial Award in Engineering
The University of Western’s Roger A. Shorey Memorial Award in Engineering is a $2,500 award offered to a full-time undergraduate student entering their first year in the Faculty of Engineering. The application deadline is September 30.
9. Gerald J. Maier/Dean Wirasinghe Entrance Award
The University of Calgary’s Gerald J. Maier/Dean Wirasinghe Entrance Award is valued at up to $8,000 and offered annually to undergraduate students entering the Schulich School of Engineering.
10. Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship Program
The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship Program awards recipients with up to $40,000 (up to $10,000/year) towards an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science and an offer to complete a summer internship at Amazon! Applicants must be a high school student in the U.S. and authorized to work in the U.S. Applications will reopen in the fall of 2024.
11. MITx: Engineering the Space Shuttle
Learn all about the world’s first reusable spacecraft – the Space Shuttle – from the very people who designed, built, and operated it for 30 years in the free course: MITx: Engineering the Space Shuttle!
12. MathWorks: Introduction to Engineering Design
Gain a comprehensive overview of the engineering design workflow through the power of modelling and simulation in the free course: MathWorks: Introduction to Engineering Design!
13. BrownX: Introduction to Engineering and Design
BrownX: Introduction to Engineering and Design teaches students about the primary fields of engineering and the engineering design process. The course is self-paced and free!
14. Engineering 101
The University of Calgary offers many engineering camps for grades 3 through 9. Spend a week investigating what it means to be an engineer at the University of Calgary and beyond!
15. Jr. DEEP Summer Camp
The University of Toronto’s Jr. DEEP Summer Camp is a STEM-based summer camp offering courses on cutting-edge topics in science, technology, and engineering for students in grades 3 to 8!
Mathematics
Wrapping up this edition, we have 15 more extraordinary resources designed to assist your exploration into the world of mathematics. Dive in and ignite your journey in the fascinating landscape of math!
1. Gertrud and Nicole Baer Bursary for Women in Applied Mathematics
The University of Ottawa’s Gertrud and Nicole Baer Bursary for Women in Applied Mathematics offers a full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate program in mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics a $2,000 bursary. The application deadline is October 31.
The J. Léopold Vachon Fund (OSOTF) at the University of Ottawa offers a minimum of $500 in financial aid to women students with Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status enrolled in a French-language Honours Bachelor program at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the Faculty of Science. The application deadline is October 31.
The University of Waterloo offers numerous awards to support undergraduate students entering a program in mathematics who are experiencing financial difficulties.

The 4KPi Award for Black and Indigenous Students in Mathematics at the University of Waterloo are two awards, valued at $12,566.37 each, provided annually to deserving full-time Black or Indigenous students entering Year One of any co-op undergraduate degree program within the Faculty of Mathematics (excluding Software Engineering).
5. Sprickerhoff Family Bursary for Women in Mathematics
The Sprickerhoff Family Bursary for Women in Mathematics at the University of Waterloo is a $5,000 bursary awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student who identifies as a woman entering Year One of any program in the Faculty of Mathematics.
6. Excellence in Math Scholarship
The University of Victoria offers an Excellence in Math Scholarship to students entering UVic directly from secondary schools who have achieved outstanding performance on The Fermat and/or The Euclid.
7. Marcil Lavallée Accounting Scholarship
The University of Ottawa’s Marcil Lavallée Accounting Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a Francophone student who is registered in the accounting program.
8. Linda Young Award in Accounting and Finance
The $2,000 Linda Young Award in Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo is offered annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering the first year of any program in the School of Accounting and Finance.
9. Swartzen Memorial Scholarship
The University of Ottawa’s Swartzen Memorial Scholarship is offered to recognize academic excellence and provide financial support to a student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
10. Mathematics National Scholarships
There are approximately ten scholarships, valued at $12,000 to $25,000 each, awarded to incoming undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo enrolled in any of the academic plans offered by the Faculty of Mathematics (excluding Software Engineering and Computing and Financial Management). Applications have closed for this year, but this is something to look forward to next year!
11. HarvardX: Calculus Applied!
Apply tools of single-variable calculus to create and analyze mathematical models in the free course HarvardX: Calculus Applied!
12. AdelaideX: Maths Foundations
The free course AdelaideX: Maths Foundations provides learners with the foundational skills necessary to excel in mathematics!
13. MITx: Financial Accounting
Learn financial accounting, how to read financial statements, and how to gather inputs for valuation models through the free course MITx: Financial Accounting!
14. ImperialBusinessX, ImperialX: Accounting Essentials
ImperialBusinessX, ImperialX: Accounting Essentials is a free introduction to the financial and management accounting skills needed to succeed in both MBA study and business.
15. Mathematics Summer Camps
The University of Toronto offers grades 1 to 8 in-person and online math summer camps this year! Registrations are now open!
